TAKE OUR ANONYMOUS SURVEY AND HELP US ADVOCATE FOR SURVIVORS ACROSS CALIFORNIA!
What is CARE?
Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) is a primary resource for survivor healing, and provides confidential services to students, staff, and faculty at each UC.
Our S+A research findings showed that students overwhelmingly prefer healing resources (like CARE), over punitive agencies or non-confidential resources like Title IX.
S+A CARE Study
Our Findings
In our study, survivors (81% and 71%) were more likely to indicate that they felt emotionally supported and respected by CARE and CAPS staff, in comparison to Title IX staff (36%).
Despite this, funding for CARE is not standardized across the UC system, and many CARE organizations must apply for additional grants to fund their projects.
CARE Advocate: Student Ratios
For example, UCLA has the largest student population of any UC, yet employs only 4 CARE advocates (as of Summer 2024) with a ratio of 1 advocate for every 11,670 students (using Fall 2023 data on student demographics).
CARE provides services to students, staff and faculty at each UC. Given that the table provided only includes CARE advocate-to-student ratios, these ratios are much larger in reality.
What can be done to address this?
Recommendations
increase and standardize CARE funding across the UCs
All survivors should automatically be connected with a CARE advocate when seeking help
Have UCPD call in a confidential CARE advocate for any meeting with a survivor of SVSH, similar to the medical chaperone model
